Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Google Ads captures people already searching; Meta Ads creates demand. How to choose by product, sales cycle and budget — and when to run both.

The two platforms answer different questions. Google Ads puts you in front of someone at the moment they search for what you sell. Meta Ads — Facebook and Instagram — puts you in front of people who fit your customer profile, whether or not they were looking.

Neither is better in general. Which one deserves your first dollar depends on whether people already search for what you offer, how long they take to decide, and how much you can spend while the campaigns learn.

How they differ

  • Intent

Google is demand capture: the person typed "emergency plumber near me" or "CRM for clinics". Meta is demand creation: you interrupt a scroll with something interesting enough to stop for.

  • Targeting

Google targets keywords, plus location, device and audience signals. Meta targets people — interests, behavior, lookalikes of your customers and anyone who has visited your site or engaged with your page.

  • Creative

Search ads are mostly text, so the offer and the landing page do the work. Meta is visual: the image or video is the ad, and it needs refreshing regularly because people tire of seeing the same one.

  • Cost and lead quality

Clicks on high-intent search terms usually cost more, and the leads are usually closer to buying. Meta clicks are usually cheaper and the leads earlier in the decision, so they need faster and more persistent follow-up. Both vary a lot by industry and city — judge on cost per sale, not cost per click.

When Google Ads is the better start

Start with Google when people already search for your service by name: urgent and local services, B2B software and services, high-value purchases people research, and anything where "near me" matters. You are paying to be found by someone who has already decided to buy from somebody.

It also suits small budgets better than people expect, because you can limit campaigns to a handful of exact, high-intent keywords in one city and only pay when someone clicks.

When Meta Ads is the better start

Start with Meta when the product is visual or new, or when people do not know to search for it: fashion, food, beauty, home decor, events, courses and consumer apps. It is also the strongest place to retarget — showing an offer to people who visited your site or added to cart and left.

Lead forms inside Facebook and Instagram produce volume cheaply, but only pay off if every lead is called or messaged quickly. Connecting the form to WhatsApp and your CRM matters as much as the ad.

Running both

Most founders end up using the two together: Meta to introduce the brand and retarget, Google to catch the searches that follow. People who have seen you on Instagram are more likely to click your search ad a week later.

If you can only fund one properly, fund one. A budget split too thinly gives neither platform enough conversions to optimize, and you learn nothing.

Before you spend on either

Set up conversion tracking first — form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks in GA4 and in each ad platform — so you can see which campaign produced a customer rather than a click. Send traffic to a page built for that one offer, not the homepage. And decide in advance what a lead is worth to you, so you know when a campaign is working.
